I picked Catharine Westwood for this week’s Posthumous Profile because of the unusual shape of her headstone. Catharine Caroline Dallin was born on November 6th, 1840 in Ilfracombe, England. Her father was a sailmaker, and the family lived in Ilfracombe until Catharine was 12-years-old. Catharine’s mother, Anthea died in 1849 and was buried in Ilfracombe. On February 10th, 1852 they sailed to America from Liverpool, landing in New Orleans two months later. By 1859 the Dallin’s were living in Springville, Utah and on June 17th of that year, Catharine married Richard Webley Westwood.
Catharine Caroline Dallin Westwood died on July 31st, 1874 in Springville, Utah from heart problems. Her youngest child was just two weeks old and would die just a couple of weeks after Catharine. You can find their plot in the Fairview Cemetery, which also holds the graves of approximately 40 people from the Sanpete County Infirmary (Poor Farm).
Fairview Cemetery is a 1.5-hour drive from Salt Lake City and is located just West of Fairview on 100 N (Cemetery Rd).
